Regent’s Park Summer 10k

This was not a race that I was planning to do, but as I was in London that weekend it would have been rude not to.

It was an early start but we (me and my teenage supporters ) got to the Park for 8.45am and I registered and carried out my usual pre race routine of 3 trips to the loo.

We were sent to the start and the RD advised that as it was 30Cat 9.30 am please do not go for a PB but run carefully. We set off and he was right, it was hot, I settled into my pace and followed everyone else. The run was 3 x 2 mile laps, and was well sign posted and marshalled with the most enthusiastic people.

I ran past a boating lake, through beautiful gardens and parkland. I also ran along the back of London Zoo, I could see camels and a huge Turkey!! I reckon if the lions had escaped I would have got a PB no problem!!!

Lap one over and a cheer of “come on mum” from the girls was extremely welcome. It was super hot by now and my second lap was slower until a runner said “is that the Darlington Quakers?, my friend runs with your club” I’m afraid I can’t remember the lady or her friend – blame the heat. The power of the black and white T shirt.

As with parkrun the second lap was the hardest, but after another jog past the camels and another cheer from team Wendy I started on lap 3. The park was filling up with walkers, joggers and tourists so getting round was trickier but then chatted to a Dr en route from the US to India. He’d had an overnight flight, tube journey and then this run… he then had about 5 hours after to get back to Heathrow to go on to India. An advantage of being at the back is that there is time to chat to anyone who is at your pace.

Finally, the finish line was in sight, big cheers from my children, and loads of people who’d stayed to the end and then the medal… what it was all about! Glittery in the shape of a London Underground symbol, my favourite medal so far. In the heat with a lot of walking I managed 1:22:46 so pleased with that one!

I can highly recommend the Regents Park series, they are all year round, and the organisation, the support, Info etc is top notch, so if anyone’s in London look them up.
