Quakers wasted no time running in 2020 with several racing on the first day of the decade.

April Corbett gets airborne at the Old Monks trail race

The first of the year’s Hardmoors events took place with the double header of the 15 and 30 mile events, both taking in a circular route from Robin Hoods Bay. In the 30 miler, Emily Beaumont finished in 6:10:19 along with Rachel McMahon in 6:50:49 while Karen Dove completed the 15 miler in 4:18:59.

Down in Kent, David Aiken and Rebecca Howard ran in the Lamberhurst 10K, the former in 41:16 and the latter in 42:46 (and first in her age category).

Simon Rek was the sole Quaker at the Captain Cook’s fell race, completing the 5 mile race up to the monument and back again in 49:46.

In the first weekend action of the year, the biggest turnout was over at Hart for the Old Monks Trail Race, a 5.5 mile multi-terrain route. Ian Hart finished in 46:45 followed by Mike Watson (46:50), Anthony Corbett (48:44), Wendy Colling (48:49), April Corbett (50:19), Mark Colling (51:25), Sandra Cass (52:27), Matt Jackson (58:44), Polly Lerner, Hayley Wooding, Helen Clarke & Hannah Alderson (all finishing together in 1:01:12) and Gill Wallis (1:10:25).

Ten Quakers headed up to Hamsterley Forest for the trail half marathon taking place there. Tom Chapman completed the undulating route in 2:11:59 followed by Brian Martin (2:26:05), Rebecca Bowes (2:42:53), Claire Chapman (2:44:47), Julie Russell (2:46:59), Angela Clement (2:49:26), Sandra Martin (3:10:30), Barbra Barker (3:12:46), Jo Meynell (3:13:11) and Sarah Bayles (3:32:55).

Down at Saltaire in West Yorkshire, there were several races on offer as part of the Sir Titus Winter Trot. In the 20 mile distance, Katherine Hackett finished in sixth place overall in 2:46:49, while in the 10K event, Ruth Middleton came home in 1:09:01.

Abbie Hull did the Catterick run in 26:57, Kathryn Plant ran at Redcar in 28:36, David Eric Ledgerwood finished at Riverside in 27:18 and Alec Cinamon did the Hackworth run in 36:40. At Cotsford Fields, Lisa Jenkins and Michelle Dale finished together in 35:03, Anneli Mackenzie Brown did the Flatts Lane run in 30:31 and Anthony Corbett ran at Millfield in 25:45. At Jesmond Dene, Phil Rutter and Gill Colling ran there in 24:10 and 31:14 respectively while at the Jubilee run, Mary Macivor and Helen Whiting finished together in 33:24. Further afield, David Aiken and Rebecca Howard did the Bedgebury Pinetum run in 20:14 and 23:15 respectively, while Jes Smith ran the Beverley Westwood run in 33:04.

Flying the flag overseas were Paul and Angela Taylor, who did the run at Centennial Park, Sydney, Australia in 27:29 and 31:42 repsectively.
