Last weekend, four plucky Quakers took part in the innocuous sounding Kilburn Kanter, a challenging 23 mile event with over 4000 feet of ascent in the Hambleton Hills, with a climb up the notorious Sutton Bank thrown in for good measure. Battling the hills made worse by the muddy conditions underfoot, Charlie Bogg completed the run in an impressive 4 hours 50 minutes followed by Abbie Hull (4h:59), Andrew Lambe (5h:07) and Roy MacDoughall (5h:30).
Anthony Corbett and Lorraine Porter flew the flag for the Quakers in this year’s Dalby Dash 10k near Pickering. Corbett took 52:02 to complete the course, which had at its start a very steep 2 mile climb, while Porter crossed the finish line in 64:36. As well as having an exhilarating run, the pair raised money for Help the Heroes and local charities.
The final race in the club’s 10k series took place in Newcastle on Sunday with 17 Quakers looking for some last minute points in the Heaton Harriers Town Moor Memorial 10k. Wayne Bramley led the club home in a good 40:23 followed by Mark Robinson and Colin Wilde in 41:50 and 42:17 respectively. Little separated Pete Smith (43:31) and Darren Stockdale (43:45) with Peter McCrossan following in 46:02. The Quakers’ women also put on a good show with Stephanie Gee coming in first for the women in 49:51, just in front of Jackie Nicholls in 49:57. Other Quakers who did the club proud were: Steve Padgett (50:10), Ian Hammond (51:32), Julie Whinn (54:48), John Whinn (55:33), Gemma Smith (56:59), Leigh-Marie Ainsworth (58:43), Clare Stradling (59:48), Diane Adkins (64:09) and Julie Remmer (67:14).
The third fixture in this season’s North Yorkshire/South Durham Cross country series saw another decent turnout for Darlington Quakers with 14 runners lined up on the start line at a muddy Summerhill Country Park in Hartlepool. Brian Martin enjoyed another good run for the Quakers when he completed the 9.4k course first for the club in 38:45 followed by Sean McIntyre in 40:12 and Dave McLachlan in 42:49. Less than half a minute separated David Todd (43:31) and Ian Scott (43:53) while Graham Park edged ahead of Lee Coles, crossing the finish line in 44:26 and 44:30 respectively. Danny Gordon (48:26) and Daniel Crane (55:03) completed the line-up for the men. In the 4.7k women’s race, Lucy Jefferies finished 14th out of 75 runners in her age category in a time of 19:06, followed by Julie Jefferies in 22:21, just seconds in front of Abbie Hull in 22:23. Bev Snook put in another solid performance to finish in 23:42 with an ever-improving Sarah Beadle following in 28:57.
