For those of you that race regularly, you will have seen the white vests with a broad blue stripe belonging to local club Sedgefield Harriers.

Only set up in 2005, they put on a number of races each year which a few of us attend and indeed they helped us with the format of the recent Quaker races that we have undertaken.

I am therefore delighted to congratulate them on winning 3 awards recently !

UK Athletics Club of the Year

England Athletics Development Club of the Year &

Northern Echo Local Heroes Team of the Year

I'm sure you'll agree, a massive achievement for a small village club. Well done to all concerned !

Club News: Park Runs in the North East PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Joyeux

Today I completed the fourth of the North East’s Park runs after running around the Town Moor in Newcastle. The North East has four Park Runs: Middlesbrough, Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland. For those that don’t know; Parkrun is a series of free, friendly 5km runs around the country and our nearest is at Albert Park in Middlesbrough.

Park Runs are held every Saturday at 9am and attract around a massive amount of runners. You only need to register once on-line prior to your first run and after that you can turn up any week without any further registration. They all offer a good running surface (tarmac, grass or trail), and attracts people of all abilities - 17 minutes to over 50 minutes is the average spread of finishing times. There are toilets, plenty of car parking space outside the park and most have a cafe nearby for afterwards!

So after completing all four I thought I’d give you a quick heads up on each, in case you fancied trying one on for size!

  • Middlesbrough: Around Albert Park, this is all on Tarmac and regularly attracts over 300 runners. It’s a little twisty but overall is very quick! High PB potential!
  • Sunderland: One hill the start and at the end makes this a little harder but a couple of long straights and a nice loop around a lake make it good run!
  • Durham: A route organised by committee! It has trail, grass, tarmac and a log bridge! Very varied and, in places, scenic. Poor chance of a PB but is something different!
  • Newcastle: Around the flat Town Moor, which leaves you exposed to wind. No storage at the start and lots of cows wandering around(!). Nethertheless it’s all on tarmac and good quality paths and is super fast! Good potential for a PB!

If you fancy doing one, the website to visit is www.ParkRun.com . There’s quite a few Quakers who have ran one and there’s always a couple of us at Albert Park at the least! Well recommended!

Race Report: Darlington 10k PDF Print E-mail

Well, what a day!! I have to admit that when I saw everyone gathered together for that 'series' of photographs at 10.00am on Sunday morning that I felt very proud to be a Quaker, it was a truly impressive sight!! you'd think that having witnessed it that things couldn't get better but they did.... I'm pleased to be able to tell you that for the first time ever at our home event (please correct me if I'm wrong) our ladies team of Dawn Richardson, Louise Trainor and Lucy Jefferies took the first ladies team placing with Dawn and Louise also taking the first O/35 and first O/40 ladies prizes respectively!! fantastic news - well done girls. (postscript - I'm also pleased to be able to announce that following a correction to the results that Brian Martin has been awarded the 2nd male O/50 prize).
The results are now up www.ukresults.net and after weeks of speculation about the magic '100' I can now reveal that 121 Quakers (this number keeps creeping up) completed the 10K, there may be some of you who became members after entering the race and will therefore not be shown in the results as a Quaker, please let me know if that is the case as we'd like to include everyones performance in our press report (column space allowing!).
It was evident from the conversations that I had at the finish that even though Darlington's course is not considered to be of the PB variety there seems to be a large number who actually managed to record one, if you are one of those individuals could you please let Julie Jefferies know as again it will be included in the press report, Julie can be contacted at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
A few words of thanks - Thanks go to Abbie Hull, Mark Colling, Ian Bond, Roy Macdougall and Phillip Batts for offering their assistance with timing chip removal at the finish line (great job done guys) and a big thank you to all those who were out on the course supporting their fellow club members, I know it was very much appreciated by all of us out there.
Finally, thanks everyone who entered (even if you didn't make it to the start line) it was a fantastic day for the club and one that you can all be justifiably proud of - well done to you all.
Regards
Wayne

Also massive thanks to Dawn's Dad for taking some fantastic photos! Michael has uploaded them onto the Flickr page and also onto his Facebook!

Many thanks to all who turned up last night - we had a great time and hope you all did too !

No injuries or problems were reported - and most people thought it was a lovely course. (Shame about the water obstacle being too deep !).

It was great to see so many stay for the presentation and nibbles afterwards.

Thanks to all the organisers, the marshals, the White Horse Inn for their hospitality and to Mic at Darlington Up & Running for the great spot prizes.

Results should be available late weekend.

Watch this space for details of any future events . . . . . . Wink
