Quakers' 15th Anniversary Ball 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dawn Richardson

Hi all

Cast your minds back to your more youthful days, the days when we had summers in the summer time, the kids could play out safe in the streets, and your Mom had a doll for a toilet roll holder and the dolls knitted dress went over the toilet roll itself.  Well, that's what I'm going to look like at our ball - the dress I bought 4 years ago in Bermuda remains unworn and now's it's time to make a fool of myself.  You have been warned!!!

By popular consent (and thank you for the many responses that I received) I have booked Saturday, 29 May at The Croft Spa Hotel.  Unfortunately both dates clashed with races the next day so I went with the majority verdict.

A few people are talking about booking rooms (Dave Mc - I won't repeat what you said this morning despite it being very funny......).  Please contact the hotel directly on 01325 720319 (regular double is GBP75 per room including full english brekky and full use of leisure/spa facilities and a themed room is GBP104, although all the rooms I previewed looked lovely).

I have booked the same DJ as the presentation night, despite him already having reservations he has reshuffled his work to accommodate us - he obviously enjoyed having us as much as we enjoyed him!!!

It is suggested that we meet for pre dinner drinks at the hotel at 7.30pm and dinner will be served at 8.00pm.  The choice of menu is listed below and we will need to pre-order:

Starter:

Butternut squash soup or Prawn Cocktail

Main course:

Chicken or Salmon or veggie option of goats cheese pasta

Dessert:

Sticky Toffee Pudding or Fruit Tart

Tea & coffee

The bar will close at midnight with a view to the last stragglers departing at 12.30am.

Tickets will be priced at GBP20 per person.  Due to my work committments (or lack of time management) I'm sure you are all aware that I'm the one flying up into the school as everyone is running out, with this in mind in the first instance I would be grateful if you would give me your cheques on a club night, making it clear who you are and food choices if you have already decided (otherwise we can sort that later)

I will issue tickets nearer the time.  It is not my intention to have a raffle.  If anyone is extremely upset by that, please advise.

Any questions, please see Dawn at a club night.  Brian - if I see my phone number in any telephone boxes in Cockerton I know who is responsible!!!

Think that's about it.  Sorry about the lengthy email, for the newer members - you will realise why Phil now does the press reports.......

Dawn
xxxx

PS.  This bit is for the ladies only - I ran down Grange Road the other night and was stopped dead in my tracks by a sign saying 80% off selected evening wear.  Don't know which shop it was but it was half way down in the direction of town.  Can also recommend Leggs in Skinnergate.  If I lose my balls and don't wear the pink meringue number I'll be wearing my little black number which I purchased from there for our 10th anniversary ball - it's still going strong - unlike me.........  And for the guys that shouldn't be reading this bit - it was an INVESTMENT!!!

Quaker Team Races: Trail 24 and The Cleveland Way Relay PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Joyeux
Sunday, 21 February 2010 12:20

Thinking of trying something different in 2010? The Quakers are hoping to enter teams in both the Cleveland Way Relay and the Thunder Run Trail 24 hour race.

The Cleveland Way Relay (From Darren Park):

I’m just starting to look at organising this year’s Cleveland Way Relay Team (which takes place in June). I know it’s early to start thinking about it, but it gives people a chance to reccy their part of the relay. The event organisers website, www.nym.ac, contains information about the event including the course and the relay sections. If you need to know anything else just e-mail me or talk to anyone who took part in last year’s event. Speaking on behalf of everyone who did last year’s event; it was a great day and I’m sure all who took part will want to do so again this year.

Although we only put one team in last year (and came second from last) it’s not about winning – it’s all about taking part; enjoying the day; finishing in one piece; and getting the Quakers out there working as a team! This year I would like to put two or three teams together, which I'm sure we can - the Quakers have 200 club members! It doesn't matter if you’re a beginner or an elite runner, any one can take part.
In brief, the relay starts at Filey and finishes at Helmsley approx 109 miles with 16 sections and 16 runners per team and the most important fish and chips at the finish.

If anyone is interested could you e-mail me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or contact me on 07966572425. At this moment in time, I just want to get approximate figures to see how many people are interested. I will have a meeting at the Model T pub in March and can go through maps, routes, transport and any other business.

I believe the Cleveland Way Relay event will be on Sunday 27th June and will confirm asap.
Once again, this is open to everyone of all abilities - just come along and have a great day out and enjoy yourself, if you’re a road runner get off the road and try a bit off roading!

Finally, the relay is well marked out in most places and if you get lost – it just adds more fun to it all.

With many thanks
Darren

Club Championship 2010 PDF Print E-mail

It seems like there may be a shortage of 'short' races that fit our championship criteria this year. To try to combat this potential problem we have taken the decision to include the Cowpen Bewley Absent Friends Trail race in this years championship. We know this is not ideal as it take place in less than 3 weeks time - February 14 - but entries only need to be in by February 8 so there is still over a week to enter. There is a race limit however - so beware. Entry forms in the race folder available on club nights or from Billingham Marsh House Harriers website. www.marsh-house.org

Also, please note that the Hartlepool Marina 5 Mile race on March 28 will also be included in the 2010 championship.

We are pulling together the dates of races from various sources and hope to have at least a provisional championship list out within the next two/three weeks.

If anyone is looking for a multi-terrain approx 10k run on Sunday, then Sedgefield Harriers Winter Handicap is on. This is an invitational run (not a UK Athletics registered event) - but as members or guests of Quakers Running Club you are invited. There is no entry fee - however donations for refreshments at the finish would be welcomed.

The start is in a field on the left hand side of the road as you go into Fishburn from Sedgefield. Registration is from 9am and the race starts at 10.30am. As it is a handicap event, please try to remember your fastest 10k time of the last 12 months - but if you haven't done one, the organisers will estimate from any results you do have ! (Be honest !) Embarassed

Obviously with the weather, parts of the course will be soft, wet and muddy - and as always runners take part at their own risk. The route will be marked and marshalled.

Congratulations to Peter Rowley! PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 23 December 2009 18:20

Continuing on from the recent good news relating to the clubs membership levels, more good news, I’m sure that Quakers RC member Peter Rowley won’t mind me revealing that he has recently received a letter from Gerry Sutcliffe (Minister for Sport) appointing him as the Regional Community Sport Champion for the North East (this follows on from his previous role as the Chairman of Sport England North East and is in addition to his other sporting administration roles which include being an independent member of Sport England's Audit, Risk and Governance Committee and the North East of England's representative on LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012).

On behalf of the club and its members I've sent Peter our congratulations in recognition of his achievement.

The Quakers celebrate 200 Members!!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne Bramley

I think I’d be correct in saying that anyone who’s been member of Quakers RC for any length of time can’t fail to have noticed the continued growth of the club over the last year or so, it’s not an unusual occurrence to see 70 plus individuals pounding the streets and fields around our base during our training sessions, similarly the numbers regularly turning out at races has also been an impressive sight (as you probably know, we broke our all time record number of entrants at this years Darlington 10k with 73 members standing on the start line ready to go)

The clubs success can be attributed to a number of things, the work put in developing and promoting the club championship by Anthony Corbett, Stuart Hardcastle and Richard Payne, the 10k leagues by Jeff Marriott, circuit training with Michael Joyeux, the continued and much appreciated devotion to duty of the clubs coaches and it’s officers and last but certainly not least the friendliness of it’s members.

Why am I bringing this to your attention? Well, I’m really pleased to be able to report that the club has just enlisted it’s 200th fully paid up senior member, a fantastic achievement I’m sure you’ll agree and a testament to the welcoming nature of the club and the efforts of all concerned. Keep up the good work and maybe our 300th member won’t be so far away.

Here's to 2010
Wayne

The Durham Dales Challenge

The entry forms for the Durham Dales Challenge are now available, the Durham Dales Challenge is a 16 (or 30 if you’re mental) mile walk/run which takes place on the Durham Dales. You have to navigate to five points on the map and then return to the start. The route takes you along some stunning parts of the countryside and covers a massive range of terrain. With undulating dips and long stretches of vegetation it is the definition of “different”. This race is a must enter, the Quakers managed 15 entrants last year and it’d be great to see the race packed out with more club vests! Here are some random quotes from last year’s entrants...

"I have just got into off road running and found the race challenging and enjoyable. The check points are a great thing and make the whole thing less tedious and the volunteers at these stops were great with offers of cakes and other treats along the way."
Sarah Beadle

"The scenery, challenge, route, great check point help and the pies and peas were the best.  Best race of the year, loved it."
Michael Joyeux

"Best organisation ever on any event done, could not improve."
Gareth Williams

You can download a ZIP file with both parts of the entry form by clicking here.

Member Spotlight

This month's member spotlight is on our Club Secretary, Wayne Bramley.

How did you get into running and why?

I used to enjoy playing 5 a-side football until a broken ankle and six weeks in plaster prompted a re-think, one of the first races I remember doing was the 10 mile Cummins Football Section Fun Run way back in 1981, I followed this up with the Northern Life / Green Howards Assault Course Run which I seem to recall involved a 5k run followed by a full assault course, rope swings / monkey bars / water etc. great fun!

What kept you going when you first started running?

In 1988, a friend at work talked me in to entering the Great North Run, it was held in July back then and was known as ‘the peoples race’ that was where my running career truly started, well sort of! I trained for the three months leading up to it, ran it, and then had nine months recovery!! And year on year for many years that was it, a yearly half marathon with the occasional Darlington 10k thrown in for good measure.

How much training do you typically do?

If I’m honest probably not enough! It really depends on what my plans are and the races that I’m aiming for. Marathons have occupied a lot of my time in recent years so the weekly mileage can get quite high (I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve said “never again” then signed up for another one a week later…..well! nobody believes me now anyway!) last year I tried to concentrate a bit more on shorter races and got by on club sessions with a couple of runs in the region of five or six miles during the week and around a 10 to 15 miler on a weekend.

Be honest, do you enjoy training?

Does anyone?? Marathon training can become particularly tedious, knowing that when you get home from work that you have to go out and do yet another training run, it’s all too easy to get bored (especially if training alone) but I really do enjoy the camaraderie found at the club on training nights, working with the rest of the guys to get the most that we can out of the training sessions.

How does it feel to have (jointly) won the club Championship this year?

Obviously I’m really pleased for both myself and Brian, he’s had a tremendous year. It’s been a fantastic championship in 2009 with individuals battling for positions not just at the top of the table but from the top all the way down to the bottom and respect to everyone that played a part. Overall though I think the real winner has been the club; the numbers we’ve had turning out at races has been brilliant to see and really got Quakers noticed wherever we went.

What's your aim for 2010?

The Edinburgh Marathon in May will be my last chance to have a go at the O/45’s club record (2:52:24) I’d like to get in to the best shape possible to give it one last shot before moving in to a new age group in June.

What is your favourite race/distance/terrain?

I have to admit that for me there is something very special about the London Marathon and although Amsterdam’s marathon didn’t go quite according to plan, I really enjoyed the course, starting and finishing in the Olympic Stadium certainly added to the event.

What's your idea of running heaven?

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and you’re in that groove where you feel like you could run all day (I just wish I could remember the last time it happened!)

What's your idea of running hell?

Trying to keep up with Dawn Richardson on a 20 mile training run! (Only kidding Dawn, honest!!)

Any advice to newcomers?

“Be patient” it doesn’t happen over night, you have to work at it, we’ve all been there so don’t get disheartened and improvement will come with time, try to find a training partner and remember that “hard work + rest = success!! hard work + hard work = breakdown!!” Dawn R lent me a book on motivation recently and this one stuck in my mind “Those who believe they can and those who believe they can’t are both right”

How do you prepare for a race?

I usually have everything sorted the night before, Number pinned to vest and kit all laid out ready for the next morning, there’s nothing worse than getting a couple of miles down the road and suddenly thinking “where’s???”

Best way to relax/reward yourself after a race?

Usually a nice hot bath (to feel human again) followed by the odd beer or two (I’m easily pleased!)

How did you end up doing so much for the club?

That’s a good question! I joined Quakers in 1998 when it was still a relatively small club, I knew Keven and Keith Shevels (two of our founder members) from Harriers days and I suppose I got involved right from the start by negotiating a move from Cleveland Bridge’s ground where Quakers was based to Hummersknott School; the rest is history as they say. From the work done on a daily basis for the club through to ‘Race for Life’ I get a lot of satisfaction from ‘making things happen’ and continuously look for ways to take Quakers forward and to give our members what they want from the club.

How do you feel about the growth of Quakers, especially as we push on towards the 300 members mark?

Hopefully the continued growth of the club means that we have the recipe right, other than our excellent website and press reports we don’t go out of our way to advertise our presence, so word of mouth must also play a big part. We don’t force membership on people; they join because they want to – to be part of a great club.

What would you like to see happen next with Quakers?

We like to keep our options open and are always willing to listen to any proposals put forward, we’ve got one or two irons in the fire at present which may or may not come to anything but the one overwhelming thing that came out of last years AGM was that which ever road Quakers follows it must never lose its identity or its ethos, the elements that make Quakers what it is today.

What is the best part of the club in your opinion?

Without doubt the friendliness of its members and also its ability to help people change their lives for the better.

Apple, Water, Banana or Mars bar in your ideal goodie bag?

I don’t have a sweet tooth and definitely don’t do the 5 a day thing so I guess it has to be water (just as long as it’s been processed by the Guinness brewery first!!)

And finally, what is it with you and hills?

I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about, anything said about my dislike of hills is nothing but a malicious rumour spread about in the main “by me”! (being a self confessed member of the Flat Earth Society and all) actually it hasn’t always been like that, I did many Fell races in the early days, Doctors Gate, Guisborough Woods and St John’s Chapel to name but a few. Back in 2002, I was fortunate enough to record my one and only race win, ‘The Hamsterley Forest Jubilee 10k’ which I’m sure anyone who ran it will tell you is ‘an undulating trail race’ so I guess it’s just that as I’ve grown older I’ve developed this insurmountable fear of heights and therefore stick to the flatter races!!!
